"There are times when listening to the Scottish Guitar Quartet that it's only knowing their surnames that reminds you that they are, in fact, Scottish. There's the "only missing castanets to be Spanish" flavour of Malcolm MacFarlane's The Road to La Mancha, a touch of Italian romance here, a little French nostalgia there and a certain Swiss precision in their execution.

It's this quality that's most noticeable as they celebrate the launch of their third album, Landmarks. The technical excellence of their playing is undeniable and the way they swap roles with their interlocking rhythm parts, bass lines and melodic picking is admirable in the extreme. But what's too often missing is the willingness to let their guitar strings sing the blues.

There's no lack of compositional ideas coming through. One of the best tracks on the new album, Ged Brockie's See You In Seattle, has a Pat Metheny-like construction, with its sighing phrases and sunnyskies chord sequences and, although, despite all four's jazz credentials, they seldom dwell too long in that style, when they do, such as on the quicksilver bebop of an earlier piece, Denial, they generate a fair degree of heat.

Of the new material, Seattle and La Mancha, which is something of an epic, with lots of dramatic pauses and dance step figures, sound most ready to join the enduring audience favourites, Nigel Clark's bustling Ice and MacFarlane's nimble Near the Circle. The farmer continues to be a splendid feature for its composer's dazzlingly mobile fingers and a strong showcase for the quartet's teamwork alike."
