"They might have an ominously classical-sounding name, implying seriousness, reverence, and a desire to respect their elders (as it were), but the Scottish Guitar Quartet are far from the humourless players one might expect when encountering an act with such a stern, severe name.

In fact, they are more jazz than classical. At least, that’s where their backgrounds lie, though they touched on most genres of music at the weekend.

There are quietly picked, ringingly traditional moments, but there are also forays into jazz’s beep recesses, and explorations of experimental, contemporary classical tropes.

The latter come in the second half of the show, where the quartet’s members - already playing on futuristic looking, and beautiful-sounding guitars made for them by the German artisan Frank Krocker - incorporate Roland synths, allowing them to modify and modulate their instruments’ sound in real time.

This doesn’t always work - there’s an occasional feeling of experimentation for its own sake - but when they do pull things off, it’s a thrilling synergy of the organic and the electronic.

Elsewhere, snatches of syncopation and jerky, stop-motion dynamics have you questioning (in the best sense of the term) where each piece is headed. All in, it was a refreshingly intelligent, and wonderfully playful, programme."
