Kenny Mathieson. JAZZWISE.  November 2001

"The acoustic guitar has always been something of a side issue in jazz (all honourable exceptions allowed), and while the Scottish Guitar Quartet’s all acoustic line-up is not entirely without precedent, it is still a pretty unusual format. The group was formed by Malcolm MacFarlane around 18 months ago, with fellow pickers Nigel Clark, Kevin Mackenzie and Ged Brockie filling the other chairs (in this case, that is literal rather than metaphoric). Their debut album is a fine snapshot of where the band is now. They play the odd standard in concert, but the 12 pieces represented here are all original compositions, drawing on influences from folk, flamenco and various other points of the musical compass, as well as various shades of jazz. All four contribute, with MacFarlane and Brockie providing the Lion'’ share (one track is by another guitarist, Ross Milligan, who is also an occasional dep in the band). All four players are distinctive stylists, and each is capable of highly inventive soloing, while their imaginative voicings and ensemble arrangements help compensate for the limited variation in tone and timbre available to them."
